Remove The Need

So Jim O'Rourke was just some dude who joined Sonic Youth in the early 2000s, right? Wrong. Very wrong. His music dates back to the late 80s through his education at DePaul (where he recorded one of the best electro-acoustic records of all time, 'Tamper') His music from this period is hard to describe in one word, with the exception of "EXCELLENT" It's disturbing, it's awe-inspiring, it's beautiful, dreamy and nightmarish. More of his early works will be posted here for sure, but to christen the early O'Rourke extravaganza, behold his 1993 release of "Remove The Need" off of the Land Down Undeh's Extreme Records label. Note: The one-minute mark in 'Zurich Two' will prove my point of this music's excellency. Not to be confused with the 1989 cassette release also entitled "Remove The Need", which for the record could be his most disturbing compositions to surface.

Marc Ribot

Requiem For What's-His-Name

Marc Ribot's 1992 release "Requiem For What's-His-Name" features The Rootless
Cosmopolitans. Beautifully arranged pieces of melodic movements, punk jazz, and pure avant-garde chaos, Ribot ungulates complicated rhythms and dense layers of instrumentation that keeps you listening again and again, however hilarious some of the musical ideas are. There's even a classic Ribot rendition of a timeless standard, Caravan.

A traveling circus of freakishly virtuosic, grungy, filth mongrels, the Rootless Cosmopolitans complicate the sound of this record with undeniable hell-born jazz antics in the best ways possible.

Personnel:

• Marc Ribot – guitars, vocals, E-flat horn, piano, drum sequencing
• Wilbo Wright (1, 2, 7–8, 11, 13) – detuned guitar (on (1)), bass
• Roy Nathanson (1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 13, 15) – soprano, chermia, alto, tenor
• Ralph Carney (1–4, 6–9, 11–12, 14) – alto, sona, tenor, clarinet, assorted duck calls
• Anthony Coleman (1–3, 6–8, 10–14) – pump organ, sampler, piano, organ
• Simeon Cain (1–4, 6–9, 11, 13, 15) – drums, percussion, drum overdubs

• Zeena Parkins (6) – electric harp
• Brad Jones (6, 15) – bass
• Greg Jones (12, 14) – bass

Jason Ajemian & The HighLife

I was first introduced to Jason in Morgan County, Ohio while I was a resident at Harold Arts during Survival Session 2010. He gave me (one of) his band's albums at the end of the session. "Let Me Get That Digital" has been in constant rotation since I acquired it.

From the way out, to American Folk chants, spoken word and jazz forms, Ajemian and The High Life lay all over this record. Composing scores using AutoCAD, Jason creates the blueprints that guide the ensemble through literal spaces and corridors all with the creative freedom of improvised music and subconscious communication.

Jacob Wick (Pet/Vox)
Peter Hanson (Sax/Vox)
Owen Stewart-Robertson (Guitar)
Marc Riordan (Drums/Vox)
Jason Ajemian (Bass/Vox)

Altena Alemanha 1969

Xhol Caravan (pronounced Soul Caravan) is a band I recently discovered and instantly slapped myself in the forehead in disbelief that I never heard of these guys out before. They ARE the inventors of Krautrock. Their insane spastic and almost freakishly happy energy on stage is mesmerizing. They blend blues, jazz and psych rock in such a brilliantly balanced way. More recordings of them will be posted in the future, but for now, here's a quick good one. Only about 30 minutes, each of the 4 tracks are solid gold.

What are you waiting? Download this now and you will not listen to anything else.

Electronic Sound

George Harrison, obviously of the Beat- I'm wasting time here. You know the story. Well long story short, he is simply the coolest of the fab four. How so? He was the most modest, spiritual and quiet one of the guys. Not to mention "All Things Must Pass" is brilliant, a triple lp that is quality on all 6 sides, which is extremely rare for a triple album, even a double come to think of it. What makes him also cool is that he released "Electronic Sound" in 1969. The album is exactly what is says. George experimenting with a Moog synthesizer. The second and last release of Apple's side label, Zapple, a label launched by the Beatles to release experimental and spoken word material that would be too out there for wider distribution. (The first Zapple release was John and Yoko's "Unfinished Music No. 2: Life With The Lions") Enjoy the coolest Beatle making the coolest sounds!

Thunder Perfect Mind

Nurse With Wound's fluttering industrial freak project is a great one. Released in 1992, contains 2 tracks: Cold, a mechanical rhythmic storm of sounds and clinks in certain keys, followed by Colder Still, a more smooth yet nevertheless chilling ambient piece that only NWW could pull off. Sure the early 90s sucked with Clinton on the sax and the like, but the 90s redeems itself with records like this. Enjoy!

SYR 8 Andre Sider Af Sonic Youth

This skull-melting 57 minute live recording is absolutely astounding. Recorded in 2005 (yes, when good old Jim was still a member) at the Rokslide festival, the performance was the second performance the band did at the festival. The first was more on their structured song material the day before. The second day resulted to this righteous recording- the band wanted to show 'andre sider af Sonic Youth (english translation: Another Side of Sonic Youth) Marked in 5 minute intervals (Kim and Steve start, five minutes later Thurston comes in, etc.) the performance then blows the ears into extreme and beautiful sound with the helps of the underrated Merzbow and sax madman Mats Gustafsson. Not to be listened to in excerpts. Just let it roll. Oh yeah, and Black Sabbath came on after this set. Unreal. Enjoy!
